Access to food starts with the right tools.
The No Can Left Behind Project works to improve food accessibility by collecting and distributing manual can openers alongside canned goods. Our goal is simple: to make sure donated food is not only available, but usable.
Millions of canned food items are donated each year, but many individuals and families do not have access to a can opener. Without the right tool, canned food cannot fully serve its purpose.
A manual can opener may seem small, but it can make a meaningful difference for someone experiencing food insecurity.
The idea for The No Can Left Behind Project (NCLBP) began in a simple, unexpected way.
I was sitting at dinner with friends, talking with the person across from me, when I said, “Hey, I have this idea—collecting can openers and distributing them to people in need.”
It was a simple idea, but it came from something much deeper: personal experience and an understanding of the challenges people can face when asking for food assistance.
I know what it is like to rely on church and community food pantries. Asking for help can feel uncomfortable, and for some people, taking that first step through the doors of a food pantry can be difficult. But there is no shame in needing support. Food pantries and the people who serve through them are there to help individuals and families get through difficult seasons.
Through my own experiences receiving assistance and later through volunteering, I began to recognize a small but often overlooked problem.
People may receive canned food—but what happens when they don't have a can opener?
A pantry can provide cans of vegetables, soup, beans, fruit, meat, and other essential foods, but without a way to open those cans, the food isn't truly accessible. Something as ordinary as a can opener—an item many of us rarely think twice about—can make a meaningful difference to someone who doesn't have one.
That realization stayed with me.
And around that dinner table, the idea emerged that could turn experience into action.
The No Can Left Behind Project was born.
Its purpose is simple: collect can openers and help get them into the hands of people who need them.
Because providing food is important—but making sure people can actually access and use that food matters, too.
Sometimes making a difference doesn't begin with a complicated solution. Sometimes it begins at dinner with friends, a simple observation, and four words:
“Hey, I have this idea.”
We collect and distribute:
Manual can openers
Canned goods
Community support resources, when available
Access to food starts with the right tools.
How will this work?
